Atlanta Strip Clubs: We Three Things | The ATL

I got a peek at an early draft of Michael Schmelling’s latest book, “Atlanta,” due out Nov. 1, from Chronicle Books. Over the last three years, Schmelling has photographed the city’s ever-shifting hip-hop landscape. His pictures of Atlanta artists, their fans and various up-and-comers reminded me of Altman’s “Nashville”: full of intense beauty, grubby corners and players playing. Schmelling explains: “Music in Atlanta filters up through the strip clubs, local radio and roving parties. It’s a self-sufficient, regional scene that drives a huge part of American popular music and culture.” Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker and Will Welch of GQ contribute essays and interviews, and an accompanying mixtape download of unreleased tracks by some of Schmelling’s subjects is available from the Web site.
