AUGUSTA, Ga. | Thursday afternoon at the Masters, the Babe Ruth of golf channeled his inner Muhammad Ali, flummoxing and torturing his detractors.

Sarcastic airplane banners did not register. Billy Payne’s scalding criticism failed to rattle. Joslyn James’ arrival at Atlanta’s Pink Pony strip club was a nonissue. Criticism of a new Nike commercial sounded like background noise.

Tiger Woods was back inside the ropes Thursday, and only a dope expected failure.

Thursday, in his much-hyped return to competitive golf, Woods fired his best first-round Masters score in his professional career, shooting a 4-under-par 68, which placed him 2 strokes behind 50-year-old leader Fred Couples and 1 stroke behind Tom Watson, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Y.E. Yang and K.J. Choi.
