The music lessons are what set Doc’s apart from other ventures. Smith wants to have musicians that play on his stage teach their craft to youngsters through a partnership with local school districts.
Lessons, which are tentatively scheduled to start in the fall, will be available for musicians of all ages, and Smith wants to use his music school as a way for artists to give back to the community.
“If you hear a band you like onstage, you can ask to get lessons from them,” Smith said.
The city of Carl may seem like an unlikely place for a happening music scene, but it offers some surprising benefits.
Though there was initially some confusion about what the venue would offer – an early Barrow County News story reported that locals believed Doc’s would be a strip club – the staff says the Carl city government has been very helpful throughout the opening process.
