Atlanta Strip Clubs: Empire Enlarged

The same point was also made back in the 1990s, when three strip clubs sued the city for adopting a new ordinance that required such establishments to choose between serving liquor or nude dancers.
During that case, which was ultimately won by the city under city attorney Doug Haynie’s representation, Atlanta lawyer Alan Begner, attorney for one of the strip clubs in question, based much of his case on sworn testimony from Goldstein, who has served on the City Council since 1980. Goldstein had been the only council member who voted against the new law, which had been proposed by then-Councilman Paul Sabiston.
In testifying before Cobb Superior Court Jim Bodiford, Begner said Goldstein had testified that the council adopted the ordinance because of religious and moral reasons, not, as Haynie argued, because strip clubs lowered surrounding property values and contributed to an increased crime rate.
