Club ordered to pay $1.75 million in Douglas woman’s death
A strip club has been ordered to pay $1.75 million to the family of a Douglasville woman who was killed in a wrong-way crash on I-20 in Douglas County.
The jury returned the verdict Thursday in DeKalb State Court against the Club Blaze in Conley for over-serving alcohol to 41-year-old Otis South, who caused the July 5, 2008, crash that killed himself and 22-year-old Fatima Bird, a mother of two. Another woman was killed, and another injured in the wreck. The owners of the club were unavailable for comment Wednesday.
The family’s attorney, Trent Speckhals, said the 41-year-old Mableton man was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.398, nearly five times the legal limit of .08.
“It is such an incredibly high blood alcohol level that you’re talking about most people being comatose or near death at that blood alcohol level, so we’re not talking about casual drinking or even drinking more than you should,” Speckhals s …
