Attorneys for judge pushing probation in drug, stripper case

ATLANTA – A former federal judge who pleaded guilty to two drug-related charges involving a stripper says the court shouldn’t isolate him from his community by sentencing him to prison for his crimes. Jack Camp’s attorneys on Wednesday again asked that he be sentenced to probation. Prosecutors say Camp should serve at least 15 days in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Friday. Camp resigned in disgrace from U.S. District Court in November when he pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge and two misdemeanors. The 67-year-old said his decades-long battle with depression and a bicycling accident that caused brain damage led him to use drugs and start seeing a stripper. The filing said that a probation sentence is more appropriate than “submitting him to an already overburdened federal system.” Originally published in the Athens Banner-Herald on Thursday, March 10, 2011 report an error STORY>
