Atlanta Massage Parlors: Legislative Notebook: State massage parlor rules to get more lawyering

State Sen. Cecil Staton’s push to target shady massage parlors with a new state law will get a heavy dose of lawyering in a legislative subcommittee, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee decided Thursday.

But there are concerns that the bill doesn’t target the right people and might catch young women — or even girls — pushed into the illegitimate massage parlors while letting the parlor owner and others who profit from the business off the hook too easily.The Senate Judiciary Committee, made up primarily of attorneys, will take a closer look at the bill in the coming weeks with “the intention of moving forward” and passing a version of it, Committee Chairman Preston Smith said Thursday.One part of the bill that probably won’t change much is a section making it clear that cities and counties can regulate massage parlors and spas.Though many communities already do this, there are some who think state massage therapy regulations supersede local ordinances and thus render them null. …
