Atlanta Escorts: Victims, not criminals
Posted on February 3rd, 2010 in Atlanta escorts
Under Ms. Unterman’s proposal, girls who are picked up would be steered into programs designed to get them off the street. Other communities, like Dallas, have them. While the jury is still out on their effectiveness, it’s clear that simply arresting and rearresting child prostitutes isn’t working. Other methods are needed.
Indeed, Atlanta has a huge problem. The FBI cited Atlanta as one of the 14 U.S. cities with the highest rate of children used for prostitution.
Studies show child prostitutes often come from broken homes, lack education and have drug problems.
Some are runaways who were sexually abused.
Giving them criminal records won’t get them off the street. But showing them a way out just might.
Let’s also hope state lawmakers address the demand side of this crime. Let’s zero in on pimps and johns. Creeps who exploit girls as young as 10 deserve serious slapdowns, not slaps on the wrist.
