Georgia passed a voter identification law that makes it more difficult for ineligible people to vote, including illegal immigrants. Tea party members say they will ensure that people show a proper photo ID before voting.
Several states have been found to have voter-registration records filled with names of deceased people, outdated addresses and other erroneous information, but there is little evidence this has led to fraudulent voting. Even so, the fear of bogus votes remains.
Acorn, a nonprofit organization that assisted low-income people and no longer exists, is an example of what can go wrong, Dooley said. The group submitted voter registration cards with incorrect, duplicate or false information. In March, Acorn ceased operating after facing accusations from two conservative activists who said low-level employees had advised them how to hide prostitution activities and avoid paying taxes.
