Atlanta Escorts: Stiffer laws urged for illegal massage parlors

ATLANTA (AP) — State Sen. Cecil Staton says stiffer penalties are needed to crack down on illegal massage parlors, especially in middle Georgia, where the issue seems to be more of a problem.
Currently, it is illegal to advertise massage therapy services by a person without a valid license and to operate massage therapy services as part of adult entertainment or an escort service.
Under Staton’s proposal, the offense would become a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000 upon a person’s third offense. The person’s license would be suspended for at least a year for their first offense and permanently on the third offense.
The bill also encourages local governments to enact laws regulating massage parlors.
