We think that slavery ended in the 19th century with William Wilberforce in Britain and with the American Civil War. But bondage has simply changed with the times. Nowadays, it’s not a plantation owner who enslaves workers, it’s a rice-mill owner in India or a fishing-fleet operator in Cambodia or coffee growers in Mexico or brothel operators.

Generally, the victims are either sold into slavery by their impoverished parents or tricked into it. Olga, 23, traveled from Moldova to Dubai for a promised job. But once she was there, her “employers” forced her into prostitution. In France, 23-year-old Sabine was given by her parents to another family in partial payment for a used car. Used and abused, chained at night and starved, she finally escaped when she became too ill to work.
