The programs that were funded created the equivalent of 6,342.47 full-time jobs. The federal government requires that all agencies use a specified formula for calculating job creation. The formula takes into account full-time and part-time jobs created and jobs saved.
Using stimulus money, the Department of Labor funded the Georgia Summer Training & Employment Program, Unlimited Potential (STEP-UP) that helped 10,700 young people get summer jobs. In some cases, the youth, ages 14 to 24-years-old became the only source of income in their households, as their parents were unemployed, the Department of Labor said.
“The drug dealers, the pimps, the gang bangers, they got job programs. They are always recruiting our young people to do illegal and ill-adviced things,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. “My commitment was that I was going toe-to-toe with the drug dealers and the pimps. We’re going to offer our children the opportunity to work honestly and to earn an honest living.”
