Coming as a surprise to no one who took even 10 seconds to think about this is news that Craigslist is making money off its sex ads. When they stated a while back that they were going to start charging for adult ads its hard to see where no one saw this coming, as paying a couple of bucks to make a couple of hundred bucks doesn’t seem like the most efficient way to dissuade a prostitute, but whatever.

So now, word is, Craigslist is pulling in around $36 million from sex ads on the site, which is a fuckton of cash. It’s true, I have a scale.

Back when the fees for listing in the adult section came about, Craigslist promised to donate money collected to charity. Now, apparently, they won’t say what they’re doing with the cash, which in most circles is exactly the same as saying “charity? You bought that line?” And with law enforcement saying Craigslist is the largest source of prostitution in the country, it kinda sorta sounds like Craigslist is just a big, ol cyber pimp.

Here’s the thing with this line of reporting – is anyone surprised? Like I said, when Craigslist announced they were going to charge a fee for these listings, what did everyone take that to mean? That the hookers of the world were going to pack up shop and start selling oranges by the expressway? Of course Craigslist was going to make money off of it. Why shouldn’t they?

Craigslist, as far as anyone can tell, has been extremely helpful when law enforcement have asked for their assistance with any prostitution related investigations, so to keep ragging on the site is ridiculous. The only possible reason law enforcement and the media have to keep bringing this issue up is one of desperation. We can’t fix prostitution, but we can point a finger at Craigslist. Those monsters are facilitators! And they profit off of prostitution!
