PITTSBURGH (AP) – A paper says a federal judge has ordered four Georgia men to be held without bail on charges that they recruited homeless people to cash forged business checks at banks in the Pittsburgh area.
Investigators say the men offered homeless people or prostitutes 10% of the proceeds to cash the checks, often buying them clothing to make them look respectable, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/pCjaXq ) reports Friday.
The paper reports that twenty-4-year-old Travis Davis, twenty-3-year-old Edmund Heath, twenty-4-year-old Cordarell Pearson, and twenty-1-year-old Brandon Roseberry, all from Atlanta, were arrested Thursday and charged with conspiracy, possession of counterfeit checks and aggravated identity theft.
The paper says that 18 counterfeit business checks totaling nearly $42,000 were cashed in late September, according to an affidavit filed by U.S. Postal Inspectors.
