A dose of soulful Avery Sunshine
By Rashod Ollison, The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va.
Oct. 21–Avery Sunshine came up with her stage name on the fly.
The indie soul artist based it on characters from her favorite movies: “The Color Purple” and “Harlem Nights.” The first name comes from Shug Avery, a free-spirited blues woman in the former flick; the other is a powerfully seductive prostitute in the latter movie.
The name suits her style. Like the characters, Sunshine’s music is sexy, sly and sassy, with a potent gospel undercurrent blowing through her vocals.
“A friend of mine came up with ‘jazzgosoul’ to describe what I do,” said the singer-songwriter, who was born Denise White. “It’s a little jazz, gospel and soul, and I’m all those things. But on any given day, I could be experimenting with anything, even country.”
