Chandler refused the job amid the controversy. “I feel strongly about the commitment that I made to el­evating Kennesaw State University’s academic stature,” he said in a state­ment. “However, I have now come to believe that the recent distractions caused by external forces would in­terfere with my effectiveness as pro­vost.”
“I was disappointed a univer­sity community as a whole would not stand up for academic freedom,” he said. “Kennesaw is an exciting place, but I don’t think it will be able to make the national transition it wants to unless it stands up for academic freedom.”
In 2009, controversy concerning academic freedom at Georgia State occurred when lawmakers ques­tioned an expert guide, meant pri­marily for press use, including people whose expertise is in research about on oral sex and male prostitution.
