Chandler refused the job amid the controversy. “I feel strongly about the commitment that I made to elevating Kennesaw State University’s academic stature,” he said in a statement. “However, I have now come to believe that the recent distractions caused by external forces would interfere with my effectiveness as provost.”
“I was disappointed a university community as a whole would not stand up for academic freedom,” he said. “Kennesaw is an exciting place, but I don’t think it will be able to make the national transition it wants to unless it stands up for academic freedom.”
In 2009, controversy concerning academic freedom at Georgia State occurred when lawmakers questioned an expert guide, meant primarily for press use, including people whose expertise is in research about on oral sex and male prostitution.
