ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Georgia’s U.S. attorney convened police agencies, legal experts and community groups for the first-ever summit to address human trafficking in metro Atlanta.
“Human trafficking is a horrific problem, and we have a particular problem here,” said U.S. Attorney Sally Yates.
A number of victims spoke at the summit and shared the suffering they endured. Some were forced into prostitution, while others were used for slave labor.
“We should all care,” Yates said. “These are all our children.”
Summit participants discussed state and federal laws dealing with human trafficking, as well as how to spot women who are victims.
On July 1, a new law took effect in Georgia. It gives various agencies more tools to go after violators and allowed the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to form a human trafficking unit.
