ATLANTA, March 10, 2011 In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Womens Day, Atlanta Dream owners Kathy Betty and Mary Brock traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend a conference organized by CARE. CARE and its partners are trying to grow the importance of this day in the United States, as a way to draw greater attention to the plight of women and girls around the world.
Betty, Brock and Sheila Johnson (Washington Mystics) were honored to present CAREs I Am Powerful award to Peninah Nthenya Musyimi. Nthenya grew up surrounded by prostitution, violence against women and low expectations in the Mathare slums of Nairobi, Kenya. She willed her way to school, graduated at the top of her class and eventually earned a scholarship, walking to a school nine miles away each day.
