PITTSBURGH — Four Georgia men are being held without bail on federal charges that they recruited homeless people to cash forged business checks at banks in the Pittsburgh area, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Friday.
Investigators said the men offered homeless people or prostitutes 10 percent of the proceeds to cash the checks, often buying them clothing to make them look respectable, according to the newspaper.
The Tribune-Review reported that 24-year-old Travis Davis, 23-year-old Edmund Heath, 24-year-old Cordarell Pearson, and 21-year-old Brandon Roseberry, all from Atlanta, were arrested Thursday and charged with conspiracy, possession of counterfeit checks and aggravated identity theft.
Investigators said that 18 counterfeit business checks totaling nearly $42,000 were cashed in late September, according to an affidavit filed by U.S. Postal Service inspectors.
