The federal government offers special visas for victims of trafficking and other crimes.
These could be victims of domestic violence, rape, or involuntary domestic service. Brock Nickolson is a special agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“Unfortunately Atlanta is considered one of the East Coast hubs for human traficking. We have investigated cases– forced prostitution, indentured servitude, forced labor.”
He says the high numbers in the city are partly due to factors like a major airport, major interstate highways and a large immigrant population.
Victims are protected as they file their papers, and it typically takes 6-8 months for a qualifying visa to be approved.
