Throughout history, the homeless have been portrayed as drunks, drug addicts, prostitutes, and runaways, often being depicted as dirty, mentally challenged, and pathetic excuses of the human condition. It is a population largely misunderstood and shoved aside as we pass them on the streets sleeping in their cardboard box houses or pushing their grocery carts filled with the last remains of a once normal existence. Few of us, like photographer Tom Stone, who remarks about those he has gotten to know through his photography “Does such fate – whether choice or circumstance – speak nothing of us?” ever really take the time to know these presumably outcasts and perceived burdens on society who were once like us and whom, in a moment of misfortune, we could become!
